The Hills That Perfumed the World

Hidden beneath the cool canopy of Kerala’s Western Ghats, cardamom has flourished for centuries. The shaded forests, rich soil and generous monsoon rains create the perfect conditions for one of the world’s most treasured spices.

Often called the Queen of Spices, cardamom was among the precious goods that drew merchants across the Arabian Sea to Kerala’s shores. Its delicate aroma travelled far beyond these hills, finding its way into kitchens, medicines and traditions across continents.

Yet its story begins quietly—close to the forest floor, where clusters of green pods grow beneath broad leaves in the filtered light of the plantation.

Today, these mist-covered hills remain one of the world’s finest homes for cardamom, preserving a landscape where nature, cultivation and history have grown together for generations.
