The Port That Connected the World

Long before the great ports of Europe rose to prominence, ships from across the ancient world sailed to the shores of Kerala.

Muziris, believed to have stood near present-day Kodungallur, was one of the busiest trading ports of its time. Roman merchants arrived in search of pepper, cardamom, ivory and precious stones, while ships from Arabia and East Africa carried ideas, cultures and people across the Indian Ocean.

For centuries, the monsoon winds carried these vessels to Kerala’s coast, making Muziris more than a marketplace. It became a meeting point where civilizations exchanged far more than goods.

Though the port itself gradually disappeared from history, its legacy lives on in Kerala’s rich cultural heritage—a reminder that this small stretch of coastline once stood at the heart of a global trading network.
